Pandemics do not only cause infections, but also a “second, invisible disease”: stigmatization and discrimination. At the closing event of the BMFTR-funded StiPEx project, we present key findings from three years of research and discuss national and international perspectives for an evidence-based approach to dealing with stigmatization in future crises.
Discrimination and stigmatization – such as those based on occupation or origin—often accompany pandemics as a “second, invisible disease.” They affect not only individual well-being but also social cohesion and the effective management of crises. During the COVID-19 pandemic, these dynamics became particularly evident in Germany.
At the closing event of the BMFTR-funded StiPEx project, we present key findings from three years of research on the measurement, impacts, and prevention of pandemic-related stigmatization. Our analyses incorporate perspectives from the general public, the healthcare sector, public administration, and public health, and lead to concrete recommendations for action in the German context.
The two-part event (German/English) combines project findings with international perspectives, including a contribution by Amy Paterson of University of Oxford and a discussion of the ISARIC Anti-Stigma Guidelines.
We look forward to your participation and to an engaging exchange!
